Me too! In 2007 I purchased my first MacBook and little did I know back then, how much this gloss-white box of tricks would change my life for the better…
Fast forward twelve years and I now have the pleasure of running my own, independent Apple repair and support business – Fruit Geek, following 20 years in and around the IT space with several of those working directly at Apple.

However I realised as part of my tenure at the company that there were some customers who at times, felt neglected. In particular, owners of a Mac that was over five years old! They would struggle to get repairs carried out as these products are classed as ‘vintage’ or ‘obsolete’ in Apple’s eyes and when a repair was possible, the options were limited and expensive.
As an example, a failed hard drive is not uncommon in any computer of a certain age, so when the time comes it’s often a good idea to upgrade the old, mechanical drive for a more modern SSD (Solid State Drive), often with a larger capacity than the original, to boot. However, when I worked as a ‘Genius’ (and I believe this is still the case), Apple will only replace your drive for a like-for-like item. It may resolve an immediate issue, but offers nothing in terms of improvement for the customer. This scenario is typical across all of the Apple products range. Add to this an appointment system to see a technician, that can see you waiting a week or more and a repair turnaround of a similar timeframe and I got to thinking… there just has to be a better way!
